saint agnes band of the week.jpg

Introduce yourselves…

Kitty: We are Saint Agnes and we are a rock n roll band. I sing, play guitar and organ. Jon sings too and plays guitar and harmonica. Then we have Ben on bass and Andy on drums.

Describe your sound in five words...

Motorbike, Dark, Loud, Desert, Witch

What inspired you to start a band?

Kitty: I can’t remember a time when I wanted to do anything else at all. My dad is a musician and so is my older brother, so music was there right from the start. Jon and I started Saint Agnes because we started writing music together and the songs we were writing were big and bold, cinematic and Morricone inspired… We needed a band to recreate them. And it’s gotten louder, heavier and more intense since then.

Influences...

Jon: Every musician you’ve played with, every song you’ve heard or learnt how to play all goes into shaping your own music, whether you know it or not. In the band we all have wide ranging tastes, but we align when it comes to rock bands that had a fierce live show and strong identity. Black Sabbath, The Stooges, The White Stripes,  Nine Inch Nails, The Kills, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix...

Kitty: We have musical influences, of course, but I think something that particularly drives all four of us, and maybe why we are so close, is that performing live allows us to express things on stage that we find difficult to express in real life. We’re all quite shy individuals and playing live is a release for all four of us.

Highlight of your career so far...

Kitty: Recording our debut album. We spent two weeks recording it pretty much live to 2 inch tape. We existed in our own little wild world for two weeks and it was magical. And the album is finally out on Friday!

Jon: After year of being in bands where I did not quite feel I’d found my musical home or my true partners in crime, just getting to play onstage with these three people is the highlight of my life. Out of all the shows we have done our last London headliner at The Borderline stands out. Us an an independent band playing guitar music in London to a sold out crowd all through our live reputation was magical.

Ambitions...

Kitty: Being in this band is the best thing in the world so I just want to keep going, keep touring, keep making music together.

Best three new bands / tunes...

Souer  - Bristol three piece with heavy riffs and beautiful harmonies.

Amyl and the Sniffers – a scuzzy rock n roll band from Australia

Something Leather – horror show organs and rock n roll guitar, really good live too.

Dream zone...

Jon: I would love to join Nine Inch Nails onstage for a few songs, that’d be a dream come true. As a band I think going on tour with The Raconteurs would be pretty high up the list.

Best band ever seen...

Kitty: We saw Black Sabbath a couple of years ago and it was insane, I was in tears straight away. I went to a festival on my own when I was like 15 and saw Iggy Pop and also The Eagles, they played Hotel California as the sun set and the whole crowd were singing along. I also saw The Dead Weather at Glastonbury when I was a teenager which blew my mind. There’s so many!

Jon: Nine Inch Nails for two nights in a row at the old Astoria in London. My favourite band in my favourite venue.

Who are your Heroes and villains...

Heroes:

Jon: Marty McFly from Back To The Future for that guitar solo, Chris Packham the punk rock environmentalist from my home town, Jack White for inspiring us that there’s life left in rock n’ roll and it is found in being fearless.

Villains:

Jon: Our songs are filled with villains with their identities wrapped in metaphor, we’ll keep it that way.

Karaoke song...

Kitty: Madonna – Like A Prayer

Jon: Bon Jovi - Wanted Dead or Alive

Plans for 2019...

Jon: Any plans we might have had are now totally changed. The response to our new music has been so good that relentless touring awaits and I couldn’t be happier.
