VELVET HANDS BOTW.jpg

Introduce yourselves…

We are The Velvet Hands, but you already knew that didn’t you.

Describe your sound in five words...

eel in a china shop

Influences...

When we first started playing gigs, before we properly formed The Velvet Hands there were a bunch of great bands playing in Cornwall, mainly The Black Tambourines, Lost Dawn, and The Red Cords. They pretty much proved to us you could make great garage rock and roll and be living in the arse end of nowhere.

Ambitions...

We’ve had a great year leading up to this point, album of the week on radio 1, opening the main stage at Boardmasters, doing a whole bunch of festivals like Isle Of Wight and Truck (thanks to you lovely bunch). Louis has just landed a little deal with Natal drums so that’s worth a big thanks.

In terms of ambition I think we’re fairly modest in our plans to take over the world.

Best three new bands / tunes...

Hard to give just 3 because there’s so much great stuff out at the moment.

Toby’s a big fan of Trudy & The Romance. Sports Team are great, I’ll say The Rezner too because they slipped me a couple of quid. As I say there’re so many great bands like the ones already mentioned, pretty much everyone we play with are brilliant which means you’ve really gotta pull your socks up and polish your Cuban boots to stand out.

Dream zone...
When we first started doing gigs for This Feeling we had a show in Dalston which was Sheafs, us, and Avalanche Party. AP had to pull out due to a baby being born, which is as good an excuse as any. To do that lineup again would be great.

Best band ever seen...
I just saw The Strokes so I might go with that. There’re plenty of great shows I’ve seen so it’s hard to single one out!

Who are your Heroes and villains...
I got stared down by Miles Kane in Shoreditch recently which makes him villain no.1, my last name is Able too so there was this whole biblical situation going on.

Heroes are all the greats of rock and punk I suppose, songwriters and shredders.

Karaoke song...

The Nude Party - Chevrolet Van.

I recommended it to any budding musician of you fancy a single tear rolling down your cheek on the M5.

Plans for 2019...

Headlining Friday on TF’s stage at Isle of Wight, then off the next day to support Paul Weller, week after that we’re out with Liam Gallagher. Hopefully LG finds us endearing and takes us out on tour with him, that’s where the taking over the world comes in.
