Gerard Starkie - Potions (album)
Expertly combining elements of folk, country, blues and rock, Gerard Starkie's second solo album sticks closely to the same winning formula employed by his old band, critically acclaimed alternative rockers, Witness… Drenched in the Americana sound that propelled bands such as R.E.M. to greatness, but with a distinctly English flavour, Gerard’s achingly sensitive vocal delivery has never sounded better. Songs like hypnotic opener, ‘All The Licks’, and the fragile but soulful ‘Drinking Alone Down The Evil’… then the album switches effortlessly from glowing ‘West Coast’ folk (‘The Whispering’) to uplifting rockers (‘Previous Notes’) and ballads of real quality ('Potions').
An enchanting effort from one of Britain's most underrated singer-songwriters.
